Our generation has grown accustomed to 21st century facilities, and College administrators constantly strive to keep our campus as up-to-date as possible. But seriously, what's the deal with the new library renovations? It's not so much that I will no longer have a convenient place to call my mom. Or that I worry about the Econ 20 study group in the new foyer that is just asking to be attacked by an on-edge thesis writer in the 1902 Room. It's not even that the College is mixing business with pleasure with the creation of a new, hip coffee lounge. It's that in light of Spring term and the upcoming glorious weather, we could put the money toward better "renovations" with:
-
Hot dog stand/ice cream truck. In the Spring there is nothing more delightful than sitting on the Green. There's a lady in Hanover that sells hot dogs of the dopest quality out of a cart. Imagine that cart at your service as you tan on the Green. Now imagine that there is also an ice cream truck that circles the Green every hour. The possibilities are endless you can chase it around and even buy an ice cream sandwich. Could a college student ask for anything more?
-
Public napping space. Instead of chilling in Miami or Cancun, I found myself at MIT over spring break. I checked out their library for kicks (naturally). To my surprise, I walked into an entire room filled to capacity with students passed out on couches. I checked out Wikipedia and found that MIT created the space solely FOR NAPPING. Think about it a place where you won't be judged for drooling all over your books because you didn't want to walk back to East Wheelock. Who wouldn't go bananas for a napping space?
Nevertheless, after finally taking a seat in the new Baker foyer, I must admit that perhaps I can deal with the change. The lighting is unimposing, the chairs provide optimal back support and the new coffee lounge will be a less awkward location for a coffee date than the Dirt Cowboy. In short, the College has created something for Dartmouth students tired of overcrowded Collis and thesis-ridden FFB a new facetime venue. My dream of an a la carte hot dog/ice cream service may have to wait.
