Presidents of colleges and universities whose state funding could be slashed by 45 percent if the New Hampshire House's new budget is passed asked a state Senate committee Monday to reconsider the changes, The Boston Globe reported. The university system of New Hampshire which includes the University of New Hampshire, Plymouth State University, Keene State College and Granite State College normally receives $100 million annually from the state. Under the new budget, state funding would be cut to $55 million, the same level as in 1992. UNH President Mark Huddleston warned that the cuts will threaten the ongoing transformation of teaching at UNH just as "it is taking hold," The Globe reported.
The U.S. Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights is currently investigating Princeton University's alleged violation of Title IX, a 1972 Education Amendment which prohibits gender discrimination in university education, The Daily Princetonian reported. The investigation pertains to a disciplinary case from 2010, though officials from Princeton declined to give further information regarding the case. "I look forward to the resolution of the matter involving Princeton, and I have no doubt that the administration will change its policies as necessary to better protect the rights of all victims," New England School of Law professor Wendy Murphy, who filed the original complaint, said. The investigation follows a recent complaint filed by 16 Yale students and alumni regarding Title IX violations.
Yale University's Information Technology Services will begin migrating student email accounts to Gmail in September, according to the Yale Daily News. Google Apps for Education a software suite released in 2006 which includes Google Mail, Calendar and Docs will replace the current Horde email service. The shift will cut the ITS email budget by one-third because Yale will no longer have to buy new storage servers every year, as Google will provide email storage for each account, according to the News. The university's primary concern regrading the switch was email security, though Google will not have access to any of Yale students' identifying information or email data, according to the News. Yale's ITS found that 56 percent of Yale students already forward their email to a Gmail account, the News reported. Yale will join Brown University as the only Ivy League schools that have outsourced their email to Google.
