Marking its best performance at the NCAA Championships since winning in 2007, the Dartmouth ski team finished the Championships in third place on Saturday. Following a first-place finish in the 10-kilometer classic by Nordic skier Sam Tarling '13 on Wednesday, Alpine skier Trevor Leafe '12 placed fourth in the men's slalom event on the final day of competition, securing First Team All-American honors.
The Big Green squad collected 643 total points. The University of Colorado won the Championships with 831 points, while the University of Utah accumulated 750.5. The University of Vermont which won all but one regular season carnival that the Big Green competed in this year finished sixth with 575.5 points.
The Big Green used three top-15 finishes in the men's slalom event to pass the University of New Mexico, which sat 20 points ahead of Dartmouth entering Saturday's final run. Evan Diamond '13 placed 13th and Peter Ankeny '12 placed 14th.
Women's alpine skier Courtney Hammond '11 finished 14th in the women's slalom event.
At the Championships, Dartmouth received a total of 11 All-American honors eight in Nordic events and three in alpine events.
After Tarling's first place finish, Nils Koons '11and Eric Packer '12 finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 10-kilometer race. Dartmouth collected the most points in the event, finishing with 130.
The women's Nordic team also performed well on the first day of the competition, placing second in the five-kilometer freestyle event. Three Dartmouth skiers finished in the event's top 10.
