The Interfraternity Council announced its new slate after 20 candidates ran for seven positions in an election at Psi Upsilon fraternity on Wednesday, according to IFC president Tyler Brace. The slate for next year include IFC president Kevin Niparko '12 of Psi U, vice president Mike Schwartz '12 of Alpha Delta fraternity, treasurer Brad Dornak '12 of Gamma Delta Chi fraternity, programming chair Matt Gallira '12 of Phi Delta Alpha fraternity, service chair Peter Ankeny '12 of Psi U, secretary Ben Ludlow '12 of Chi Gamma Epsilon fraternity, and rush chair Hunter Dray '12 of Chi Heorot fraternity. Niparko was the only candidate to run unopposed, according to Brace. "I thought we had a very strong pool of candidates, and the people who were elected will do a great job representing the fraternity system," Brace said. "We're very fortunate that there was so much interest this year." The IFC will likely focus on issues that will carry over from this year, including relations with Hanover Police and problems with theCollege's judicial system such as "inequitable" distribution of punishment between individuals and Greek houses, Brace said.

Brown University announced that it will no longer distribute a printed copy of its Course Announcement Bulletin to students, The Brown Daily Herald reported. The University will provide catalogs to faculty members, academic advisers and peer advisers, but not to returning students in the spring and incoming students in the fall, as had been the practice in previous years. Most students favor online course information over the print catalog and the recent decision will help reduce environmental waste, Brown Dean of the College Katherine Bergeron said in a campus-wide e-mail, The Daily Herald reported. The change represents an "effort to go green" and follow the lead of peer institutions like Harvard University and the University of Pennsylvania that previously stopped publishing printed course catalogs, Brown Registrar Robert Fitzgerald said in an interview with The Daily Herald.

Public colleges and universities should be more accountable for their performance measures including graduation rates and the percentage of graduates who receive jobs after college former Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates said in a speech at the National Governors Association's winter meeting, The Chronicle of Higher Education reported. States should determine the level of funding they provide to public universities based on these performance measure, Gates said at the conference. In order for state governments to better determine which schools are adequately preparing students for life after graduation, state officials must gather more sophisticated data on student performance indicators, The Chronicle reported.
