Fraternities invite musical guests

From sinful costumes to tropical sand to classy champagne, Greek houses are offering a wide range of parties this weekend to celebrate 100 years of Dartmouth tradition.

Those hoping to escape the winter climate may wish to visit Alpha Chi Alpha fraternity's annual beach party on Saturday, featuring Brooklyn-based funk band Mokaad and Ryan Collins '13, aka DJ Ryco. The entire front room of Alpha Chi will be filled with sand, according to social chair Henry Decker '12.

"Turnout should be great," Decker said. "Our beach party is one of the biggest and best events of Winter Carnival."

Mokaad is a 12-piece funk group that draws upon the influences of artists like Sly Stone, Fred Wesley, Stevie Wonder, Prince and the Soulquarians, according to the band's website. Mokaad "gives props to all that is rhythm and blues from classic soul and gospel to hip hop," the website said.

Mokaad is a "fun" band that delivers "awesome" performances, Decker said.

"[Some of us] have seen them play at a similar venue, and we thought that they'd be an awesome fit."

Philedelphia-based DJ Michael Nemirovsky, known as DJ Nemms, will perform at Sigma Nu fraternity on Saturday from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m., according to Kedar Mulpuri '12, who helped arrange the performance.

The 20-year-old Nemirovsky has toured with the electronic hip-hop group LMFAO and rapper Snoop Dogg, and his mixes draw "energy anywhere from 80s rock to electro house," Nemirovsky's website said. The performance will replace Sigma Nu's traditional 80s-themed party, according to Mulpuri.

Kappa Kappa Kappa fraternity will hold a dance party titled "CK Crush" on Friday from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m., according to Tri-Kap social chair Maxwell David '12. Blair Randall '11, known as DJ Kemmik, will provide music for the event.

Chi Gamma Epsilon fraternity will host a two-floor dance party, a tradition of the house during Carnival, on Friday Feb. 11, according to Chi Gam social chair Eric Tanner '11.

Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity held its traditional "Champagne" party on Thursday evening. SAE hosts the event on the Thursdays before Homecoming, Winter Carnival and Green Key weekends.

The party featured the Van Buren Boys, an electro-funk group that "boasts an eclectic catalog of original music and covers and displays a singular sense of humor," according to the band's website. The six-man band, which includes Rajarshi Majumder '11 and Emmett Knox '08, played at SAE's Winter Carnival Champagne last year, The Dartmouth previously reported.

"We usually always have a great turn out for Champagne," SAE social chair Oghenetega Ogban '11 said. "It is one of the events we are known for hosting."

Kappa Delta Epsilon held an open campus midnight breakfast catered by Stinson's and a performance by Drug Money a campus rock band on Wednesday.

"Our aim was to provide an alternative to the normal dance party and to throw an event that is not based around alcohol," KDE social chair Alexandra Maceda '11 said.

Alpha Theta coed fraternity plans to throw its signature Seven Deadly Sins party on Friday, according to Alpha Theta social chair Andrew Manns '11. Those who attend the event which is based around the theme of the Biblical cardinal sins are encouraged to "dress in spirit," Manns said.

Representatives from Alpha Delta fraternity, Zeta Psi fraternity and Theta Delta Chi fraternity declined to comment. Bones Gate fraternity, Chi Heorot fraternity, Sigma Delta sorority, Epsilon Kappa Theta sorority and The Tabard coed fraternity did not respond to inquiry by press time.
