Graduate schools hold additional ceremonies

By Molly Turner In addition to receiving diplomas at the Commencement ceremony on Sunday June 13 alongside the undergraduate Class of 2010, graduates of Thayer School of Engineering, Tuck School of Business, Dartmouth Medical School and The Dartmouth Institute participate in separate graduation procedures this weekend. These procedures include the Investiture ceremonies for the presentation of awards and master hoods for Tuck and Thayer graduates, both on Saturday June 12.

The Thayer Investiture ceremony was held Saturday morning in Spaulding Auditorium in the Hopkins Center for the Arts. Robert Langer, a professor from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, served as the Investiture speaker and the Robert Fletcher Award recipient. Langer is one of the university's 14 David H. Koch Institute Professors, which is the highest distinction given to MIT faculty members.

As of June 2, Thayer expected to award 57 Bachelor of Engineering degrees, 30 Master of Engineering Management degrees, 15 Master of Science degrees and seven doctorate degrees in engineering sciences, according to estimates from Thayer School's Academic and Student Affairs Office.

Emily Koepsell, the student marshall for the Thayer commencement exercises, described her time at Thayer as a "once in a lifetime experience."

"While I'm sad to be graduating, I feel as though Thayer has prepared me very well for a career in engineering," she said in an e-mail to The Dartmouth.

The Tuck investiture ceremony was scheduled for Saturday afternoon in Tuck Circle, followed by a reception for graduates and their guests, according to a memo issued by the MBA Program Office.

David Wessel, Pulitzer-prize winning journalist, author and economics editor for The Wall Street Journal, delivered the keynote address, according to a Tuck press release. Kevin Williams Tu'10 served as the student speaker.

Class Day for DMS graduates who will receive their degrees June 13 was held on Saturday and featured a keynote address by Albert Reece, University of Maryland's Vice President for Medical Affairs. Of the students graduating from DMS, 55 will receive a Master of Public Health degree, 26 will receive a Master of Science degree, 25 will receive Ph.D. degrees and 62 will receive MD degrees. Class Day also included a hooding ceremony, in which graduates were given hoods or caps symbolic of completion of their degrees.

TDI held Class Day on June 11 for its three Ph.D. graduates, 45 Master of Public Health degree recipients and 21 Master of Science degree recipients, according to Deborah Kimbell, director of communications and external relations for TDI.

TDI held its own graduation ceremony Friday morning and TDI graduates will participate in the DMS and College graduation ceremonies, according to Ph.D candidate Roberto Nicolalde, the TDI speaker for DMS Class Day.

"It was great to be able to interact with very renowned researchers in the field of quality improvement in healthcare," said Nicolalde of his TDI experience in an interview with The Dartmouth.
