The National Science Foundation awarded 2010 Graduate Research Fellowships to three current Dartmouth graduate students and 13 Dartmouth alumni, according to a College press release. The fellowships support graduate students who plan to conduct research in science, engineering, math and technology, according to the release. Beginning with students applying to enroll in fall 2011, Southern New Hampshire University will no longer require applicants to submit SAT or ACT scores, according to an SNHU press release. Submission of scores will be optional because other indicators of academic abilities give a more holistic view of candidates' college preparedness, SNHU President Paul LeBlanc said in the release. St. Anselm College in Manchester, N.H., also recently announced the elimination of its standardized test requirement for applicants, according to a press release from St. Anselm. Administrators at St. Anselm said they hope the move will increase the school's applicant pool while maintaining high admissions standards, according to the release.

An new Arizona bill signed by Governor Jan Brewer on Tuesday prohibits Arizona public schools from conducting classes that are designed to pertain to a specific ethnic group, promote ethnic solidarity or provoke resentment against a specific race, the Associated Press reported. The legislation targeted the Tucson Unified School District's African-American, Mexican-American and Native American studies programs, according to the AP. Courses focusing on history are not prohibited under the new law, but they must be open to students of all ethnic backgrounds and not create hostility towards any specific ethnic group. School district officials from Tucson said they believe their programs comply with the new law, the AP reported. The new legislation comes less than a month after Brewer signed a highly controversial bill allowing for a stringent crackdown on illegal immigration. Six United Nations human rights experts released a report earlier Tuesday saying that students have the right to study their ethnic and cultural heritage.
