Tanner, Aiono to lead Assembly

Voter turnout was higher than in past years, with 2,508 students casting ballots this year compared to 2,136 votes last year.

Additionally, Georgia Travers '13 was elected 2013 Class Council president with 442 votes over incumbent Suril Kantaria '13, who received 304. Reilly Bertasi '13 was elected 2013 Class Council vice president.

Voters also selected Joseph Coleman '11 and Nadine Moezinia '11 to serve as 2011 Class Council president and vice president, respectively.

Tanner received 1,127 first-choice votes over Elena Falloon '11 and Uthman Olagoke '11, who received 789 and 498 first-choice votes, respectively.

In the instant-runoff voting system used by the Assembly, if a student's first choice candidate does not receive enough votes to continue to the next round, those votes are given to the candidate ranked second by the voter.

In the eighth of 10 rounds of voter elimination, Tanner received 1,148 votes, Falloon received 808 and Olagoke received 509. Tanner won in the ninth round, with 1,274 votes to Falloon's 955.

Voters appear to have responded to Tanner's promises to restructure the Assembly by eliminating the current committee systems and instituting issue-based committees.

"I am honored and humbled and excited to get to work," Tanner saidin an interview with The Dartmouth. "It was a pretty long and arduous campaign, and [Olagoke and Falloon] ran a hell of a race."

Tanner and Aiono will begin to critically examine the structure of the Assembly immediately, while also using this term to finish ongoing projects.

Tanner said they will use Summer term to "get the ball rolling" toward implementing their plans for next year.

Both Falloon and Olagoke congratulated Tanner on his victory. Tanner said he hopes to continue working with them in the Assembly.

"They are two of the most dedicated people I've seen since being involved in the organization and I hope they will continue to be involved because I need their help," Tanner said of his opponents.

Tanner added that due to the election results, he will relinquish some of his current responsibilities as social chair of Chi Gamma Epsilon fraternity, which he said is his largest other time commitment. He had previously set up a plan to slightly reorganize his responsibilities in the event that he won, he said.

Aiono, who emphasized his friendly personality during campaigning, said he was thrilled at the election results.

"I'm really happy to be serving the school next to my best friend, someone who I've admired and looked up to since my freshmen year," Aiono said.

Hix offered his congratulations and said he is interested in helping Aiono realize his goals for the Assembly.

Voter turnout was higher than in any other election during his time at the College, EPAC chair David Imamura '10 said.

"I'm really pleased that Dartmouth has taken this opportunity to participate in our democracy and ensure that their voices are heard on campus," Imamura.

Laura Zapata '11 decided on Saturday to campaign as a write-in candidate for student body vice president. Zapata talked to presidential candidates about her ideas during Winter term, but realized after Maya Granit '11 dropped out of the race that her ideas were not as completely represented as she had hoped, she said.

"I want to be the bridge that makes conversations happen," Zapata said. "Some groups don't really have the whole Dartmouth experience because they're not getting to talk to other communities."

Zapata received 81 votes in the eighth round of run-off voting.

Tanner received a second-tier sanction from EPAC on Monday after the Inter-Fraternity Council sent a recipient-suppressed e-mail endorsing Tanner.

As a result, organizations were barred from endorsing Tanner for the remainder of voting, according to a statement released by EPAC.

Melanie Wilcox '13 and Jinhee Oh '11 were elected Assembly representatives from their respective classes.

The 2012 Class Council president, vice president and Assembly representative will be elected during Summer term.

Six students were elected to serve on the Committee on Standards, with Nazar Alexander '12, Laura Kier '12, William Mergner '11, Katie Paxtion '11, Max Yoeli '12 and Dennis Zeveloff '12 netting seats.

Twenty members of the Class of 2012 were elected as members of the Green Key Society. Nazar Alexander '12, Reba Gillis '12, Yueyue Guo '12, Kamisha Hyde '12, Rebecca Lee '12, Emilyn Leiva '12, Sayak Mukherjee '12, Hilary Nguyen '12, Michael Odokara-Okigbo '12, Bishnu Panigrahi '12, Monte Reed '12, Abella Rutahindurwa '12, Deep Shah '12, Giulia Siccardo '12, Richard Stephenson '12, Mary Tate '12, Alexander Tejeda '12, Chinedu Udeh '12, Max Yoeli '12 and Sebastian Prieto La Noire '12 were elected members.
