Nine Dartmouth Medical School students and two Thayer School of Engineering students have been chosen as Albert Schweitzer Fellows, according to a Dartmouth Medical School press release. Under the program, the students will lead service projects to bring health care to underserved populations in New Hampshire and Vermont. Each Schweitzer Fellow must design a project requiring at least 200 hours of service that will work with existing community agencies and that can continue after the fellowship ends, according to the Schweitzer Fellowship web site. The students chosen from the College will work with agencies that include the Association for the Visual Arts Gallery and Art Center, the Upper Valley Haven and David's House, according to the release.
Stony Brook University, a State University of New York, has suspended undergraduate admissions and the residential program at its Southampton campus and will end its lease on its Midtown Manhattan location, The New York Times reported Wednesday. Over the past two years, New York has issued 20 percent cuts amounting to $55 million to the University's budget, according to The Times. Stony Brook will save $6 million by ending the residential program at the Southampton campus and $1 million by closing the Manhattan property, according to a University press release. To minimize the changes' impact on students, Stony Brook plans to expand student advisory services and enhance its summer academic programs, the press release stated. Since 2008, budgets for all schools in the SUNY system have been cut six times for a total of $424 million, David Henahan, a spokesman for the system, told The Times.
