A rally will be held at the University of California, Los Angeles on April 22 in support of the use of animals in biomedical experiments, the Los Angeles Times reported. UCLA professor J. David Jentsch, the rally's lead organizer, is among several University of California scientists who use animals in their research. The Animal Liberation Brigade, an animal rights organization, took responsibility for setting Jensch's car on fire on March 9, the LA Times reported. Jentsch, who uses vervet monkeys to study treatments for schizophrenia and drug addiction, said his work is "humane and carefully regulated," the LA Times reported.

The average credit card debt for undergraduate students in 2008 was $3,173, according to a study released monday by college financing company Sallie Mae, USA Today reported. The figure represents the highest level of average student credit card debt since the study began in 1998, USA Today said. In 2004, the last year in which the study was conducted, the average debt was $2,169. Graduating seniors who owned at least one credit card had an average of $4,138 in debt, while the average credit card debt for freshmen was $2,038, USA Today reported. Marie O'Malley, director of consumer research at Sallie Mae, told USA Today that figures for undergraduate credit card debt in 2009 will likely worsen because of the current economic crisis.
