When citizens of Brattleboro, Vt., voted in their Democratic primary and school board elections Tuesday, they also voted on a measure calling for the indictment of President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney. The measure was placed on the ballot after Brattleboro resident Kurt Daims circulated a petition. Several people who voted for the measure told the Associated Press that they did so because they were frustrated with the United States' continued involvement in Iraq and the administration's "disrespect" for the will of ordinary Americans. If the measure passes, it will technically authorize Battleboro police to arrest Bush and Cheney on charges of violating the Constitution if they ever come within town limits. According to the town clerk, Brattleboro's attorney cannot give the police the right to do so.

Derrick Nelson Begaye, one of three men charged with the murder of Nicole Redhorse '95, was convicted of the lesser charges of sexual assault, abuse of a corpse and misrepresentation of a situation to the authorities, according to The Durango Herald. Prosecutors said that on June 6 and 7, 2007, Begaye, along with Harold Nakai and Carlton Lee Yazzie, had sex with an unconscious Redhouse and caused her fatal injuries. Redhouse, who had struggled with alcoholism since her graduation from Dartmouth, was living at a house owned by her parents in Durango, Colo. The events leading to her death occurred at a local motel. The other two men await trial in the coming months.

Following requests from six female Muslim students, Harvard University has closed one of its gyms to men for a few designated hours, three days a week. Only women are allowed in the gym between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Mondays, and between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m on Tuesdays and Thursdays, according to the Associated Press. The gym is also staffed by women during those hours. A separate gym remains open to men during these time. Some Harvard students criticized the policy, saying that it was inappropriate in a school setting. Harvard officials said the policy is necessary to make exercise facilities available to all Harvard students because being seen uncovered or exercising can be a serious offense for Muslim women.
