The DM Manual of Style

The celebratory mayhem of Winter Carnival requires so many different outfits: bundling up for the unveiling of the snow sculpture, crazy flare for dance parties (or any other event for that matter) and looking good for frat-hopping.

With so much going on this weekend, I don't even know where to begin in order to give adequate fashion advice. But I do know that, because this is Dartmouth, each individual on campus will have different fashion plans; not everyone was born to don insanely bright spandex and ski goggles (and by now, those of you who were probably know who you are).

So to help you determine your best look, I've crafted this quick quiz.

If you scored...

Mostly A's:

You are the master of flare. Yousee the snow as a white canvas that needs a splash of color. Well, in that case, go crazy this weekend! Pair those ski goggles with some hot spandex and leg warmers; or for that matter, almost anything! Just remember to stay warm when you're outside; as much as you'd like to think that bright red bikini top will keep you warm (red is a hot color, isn't it?), do try to bundle up. I realize that this year's Carnival theme is "20,000 Leagues Under the Snow," but here's a thought: wear that bikini over a long sleeve with a pair of swim goggles.

Mostly B's:

You are the classic, safe dresser. You like to have fun, but don't like drawing too much attention to yourself. Well, here's an idea: try something new this weekend. A funky winter hat -- I love the ones with the braided ties and tassels; could you look any cuter? Pair it with a fitted tank and you are all set to head out. You're in your comfort zone, but still showing off a little bit!

Mostly C's:

Hello, party queen. Short skirts at Theta Delt? No problem. But this is February in Hanover. A good idea is to wear spandex; perhaps you could combine that skirt with a fun pair of long underwear or leggings. Some of my favorites are the American Apparel Baby Thermal Leggings; who said sexy can't be warm? Just make sure you refrain from relying on the liquid jacket. Sorry, but that doesn't actually protect you from the frigid Hanover weather at 2 a.m.

Mostly D's:

You are pretty apathetic when it comes to going out. Well, you know what? You have three days to play in the snow, three nights to go out and 72 hours to be just plain ridiculous. So here's what you do: during the day, you can wear typical winter clothes, since you're obviously someone who values practicality. When you go out -- and you will go out -- have fun, go to the 80s party and flare it up just a bit. You're never too old or too cool to act crazy.

  1. At a toga party, you wear...

A. A leopard print sheet. Jungle love, baby.

B. The classic white sheet: I don't want to stand out too much!

C. Does a pillow case work?

D. Jeans and a chill top: I don't really care about theme parties.

  1. It's Thursday, and you have a 10A. You wear...

A. Anything from my closet filled with Urban Outfitters merchandise.

B. Jeans and an Oxford. I like to look presentable at class.

C. Whatever I was wearing last night at AD!

D. Sweatpants and a T-shirt; 10 a.m. is way too early for class.

  1. Formal time! Your dress is...

A. This funky one from Free People; I heart empire waists.

B. A little black dress la Audrey Hepburn. You can never go wrong with Breakfast at Tiffany's.

C. This hot one that flaunts my curves! A little (or a lot...) of cleave never hurt anyone.

D. One I borrowed from my floormate. I haven't bought a dress since prom!

  1. It's Halloween. You go as...

A. Rainbow Brite. It's so easy to pull together, since I have so much ridiculous color in my wardrobe already! Plus, who doesn't like to dye their hair yellow?

B. A Disney Princess. Belle is my favorite!

C. A Disney Princess. A Disney Princess who went bad -- very bad.

D. I don't dress up for Halloween; isn't that for elementary schoolers?
