Police Blotter

May 8, 9:59 a.m., South Park Street

An employee of the Co-op Service Station contacted Hanover Police about a matter stemming from an April 27 incident when a middle-aged man pumped a tank of gas and attempted to pay for it with a check bearing a name that wasn't his. When the gas station worker refused to accept the check, the individual offered his Vermont state driver's license and his checkbook as collateral while he went to get cash to complete the purchase. The gas station attendant agreed to the terms, but the would-be buyer, a resident of West Danville, Vt. -- located 60 miles north of Hanover -- never returned, apparently unfazed by the prospect of driving without a license. On May 8, the station employee placed two calls: the first to Hanover Police to pick up the license and checkbook, and the second to the individual whose name was on the original check. The name belonged to a woman who, in the conversation with the employee, said she was the ex-wife of the buyer, who she said did not have permission to use the checks. In a later conversation with police, however, the woman said that she and her husband were not divorced and that she had granted him permission to use the check because she could not find the debit card connected to her checking account. Hanover Police transferred the license and checkbook into the wife's possession and she went to the gas station to resolve the situation.

When Safety and Security found her, the 20-year-old female had just vomited into the toilet, prompting a call to Hanover Police. She claimed that she was fine, but was unsteady on her feet and vomited again, this time in the presence of Hanover Police officers. The sophomore was reluctant to get into an ambulance and go to the hospital, but after authorities explained that her two options were to go to the hospital or to prison, she complied.

Hanover Police received a request for assistance with an uncooperative student from Safety and Security. Safety and Security described the 22-year-old male, a member of the Dartmouth Class of 2008, as "unruly" when he refused to go to Dick's House after officers detected a strong odor of alcohol on his breath outside of Baker Library. Hanover Police placed the junior into protective custody and brought him to the police station. At 7 a.m., almost four hours after the initial pickup, the individual finally agreed to take a breathalyzer test which revealed a blood alcohol concentration of .16. Three hours later he was taken to the local county jail where he remained in protective custody until his BAC dropped.
