Yale University sophomore Makda Asrat faces accusations of plagiarizing her review of the film "300" published in the Yale Daily News April 2. Asrat's review mirrors large portions of Dana Stevens's review on the film "300," published by the online magazine Slate on March 3. The Yale Daily News offered an apology, stating that Asrat had read the Slate article before writing her own and "inadvertantly [sic] replicated" a single sentence. Asrat's previous reviews are currently being investigated, and an editor's note saying the editors "will issue subsequent corrections if other incidents are uncovered" was added to the "300" review on the publication's website Tuesday afternoon.
Three students were arrested at Yale University on charges of setting fire to an American flag hanging outside a home on Tuesday. The students had asked for directions from two police officers and the officers returned to make sure they had reached their destination, at which time the officers saw the burning flag. All three students were jailed on several charges, including reckless endangerment and arson. Two of the young men are not American citizens and were required to surrender their passports; Nikolaos Angelopoulos '10 is a citizen of Greece and Farhad Anklesaria '10 is a citizen of the United Kingdom. The third student, Said Hyder Akbar '07, is a U.S. citizen born in Pakistan.
Governor of New Hampshire John Lynch, an ex officio member of the Dartmouth Board of Trustees, nominated Mark Bodi to the State Liquor Commission on Wednesday. Bodi is president of Griffin, Bodi & Krause, New Hampshire's largest advertising and marketing firm, where he manages all marketing for the State Liquor Commission. If Bodi's nomination is confirmed by the Executive Council, he has said he will leave the firm. Lynch described Bodi as having an exceptional background in business, marketing and promotion, and stated that Bodi would be an asset to the Commission, according to the Associated Press. The current Commissioner, John Byrne, who has been on the Commission for 12 years, will step down on April 15 of this year, though his term does not expire until June.
