The Palaeopitus senior society has attended a series of meetings with the candidates, and held a meeting Wednesday night with Kim and Dean of Student Life Holly Sateia at the Collis Center.
When The Dartmouth tried to speak with Kim on her way into the Collis Center meeting, Kim refused comment under the guidance of Sateia, who said that it would be inappropriate for The Dartmouth to interview her, particularly without speaking to another candidate who recently visited the College.
Kim formerly served as the vice president of student affairs at University of Puget Sound, but left the university in late November citing personal reasons. Before assuming her post at that university in 2005, Kim worked at institutions including Stanford University, the University of Massachusetts Amherst and the University of Colorado at Boulder.
Brandon Lueken, a Puget Sound junior who serves as editor of the school's student newspaper, The Trail, said that the paper had been unable to confirm the reasons for Kim's departure from the university last fall.
Garfield, who visited campus earlier this week, is the current associate dean at UGA's Franklin College of Arts and Sciences. The Dartmouth was unable to reach Garfield for comment on Wednesday. As associate dean, Garfield is in charge of student academic affairs at Franklin, where she also teaches history and African-American studies courses.
Prior to becoming Franklin's associate dean, Garfield worked as the residential dean of the Franklin Residential College. The FRC, a program Garfield helped to design, is UGA's only residential college, where students live in a community that integrates academic and residential life.
Crady is the vice president of student services at Grinnell, where he oversees the student affairs program and supervises departments such as housing, academic advising, multicultural affairs and health services. He also formerly served as Grinnell's associate dean of admissions.
In an interview with The Dartmouth on Wednesday, Crady expressed excitement about the Dean of the College position.
"I'm intrigued at this point," Crady said of his position as a finalist. "[Dartmouth] is a great school. It's is a very interesting position. It encompasses many different areas."
Crady pointed to his experience working with students at Grinnell for 25 years as one of his main strengths as a candidate.
"I'm very open in the way I communicate with students," Crady said, describing himself as "accessible."
The search committee has invited Crady to visit Dartmouth next week, where he will be interviewed on Wednesday and Thursday. The trip will be Crady's first visit to the College.
"Frankly I need to learn a lot more about the position as I'm there," Crady said.
The search committee, chaired by College Provost Barry Scherr, consists of several faculty members and three undergraduate students, and was convened last summer after former Dean of the College James Larimore left Dartmouth to become Dean of Students at Swarthmore College.
Scherr told The Dartmouth that he felt uncomfortable discussing any of the candidates, as the search process is still ongoing.
"It's premature for me to talk about specific candidates," he said.
Scherr reiterated his earlier comments about the qualifications that the search committee is looking for in candidates -- including managerial skills and an ability to work with a diverse student body.
Correction appended
For the record: An article on Thursday ("Names of Dean candidates surface," Feb. 22) incorrectly stated that the Palaeopitus senior society has been holding meetings with dean of the College candidates. In fact, the membership of Palaeopitus has been invited to meetings with the candidates.
