Former Wharton School of Business professor Scott Ward pled guilty yesterday to charges of producing child pornography for importation into the United States. Ward was arrested Aug. 27 when customs officials at Dulles International Airport searched his luggage and found child pornography on his computer along with several mini videotape cassettes that showed Ward having sex with an underage boy. The customs officials apparently grew suspicious of Ward on account of previous charges of sexual misconduct against him and his frequent trips to Thailand, a country known for its child sex trade. Ward's charge carries a sentence of between 15 and 30 years, and he will be sentenced May 11th.
Utah-based American Ski Company has sold Killington and Pico resorts in Vermont to S.P. Land Company of Dallas for a reported $83.5 million. This deal, which includes the sale of all the real estate owned by the resorts, comes on the heels of ASC's sale four days ago of Vermont's Mount Snow and New Hampshire's Attitash resorts for a reported $73.5 million to Utah's Peak Resorts company. The sales conclude a series of attempts by ASC to rid themselves of resorts that have put the company increasingly in debt.
Dartmouth's Mock Trial Team is on the way to the Silver Nationals in St. Paul, Minn., after one team placed seventh this past weekend at the Atlantic Coast Regional Mock Trial Tournament hosted by St. John's University. The Dartmouth team edged out 16 others to qualify for the St. Paul tournament after having a similar performance at a competition hosted by Roger Williams University two weeks ago. If the team does well in Minnesota it can enter the true national tournament in St. Petersburg, Fla. "I was really impressed," said Mike Sarinsky '07, president of Dartmouth Mock Trial. "I thought all of the effort and energy [the team] put through over the past months really shined through -- it was just another in what is becoming a history of successes for Dartmouth Mock Trial."
