Dartmouth Dining Services goes upscale Thursday in Food Court. The gourmet meal there will include fresh Maine lobster, corn on the cob, potatoes, lemons and melted butter. "It's $22.95 for the lobster which includes lobster crackers and the whole bit," DDS Director Tucker Rossiter explained. DDS ordered 50 to 75 lobsters which are to be devoured on a first come, first serve basis. "We hope that 100 or 200 people say, 'Gee I really like lobster.'" Depending on the turnout and the student response, DDS might offer "upscale options" several times during each term. "If students really have a desire, then we can do these things, that's the beauty of a declining balance," Rossiter said.
Kwame Clement, a former news anchor from Liberia who was imprisoned for his reports on government corruption, spoke on Tuesday evening at Filene Auditorium as the first speaker in the John Sloan Dickey Center for International Understanding's 25th anniversary event series. Clement called for a "renewed look at Africa" and recommended that the U.S. provide aid to "raise hope within realistic bounds." Now more than ever, Clement said, Liberia needs the support of the United States, but he cautioned that Liberia must ultimately take care of its own problems. Clement also criticized current Western media coverage of Africa as "sparing and unflattering," adding that changing that coverage will help draw attention to potential growth opportunities on the continent. Clement's public television program "The African World," can be seen online at www.theafricanworld.tv.
The U.S. Department of Justice refused to investigate Durham County District Attorney Mike Nifong, after U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales requested an investigation based on the prosecutor's conduct. Any investigation would stem from Nifong's involvement in the prosecution of three Duke lacrosse players who were accused of rape and sexual assault. A federal investigation of Nifong would be inappropriate because investigations are continuing on the state level, Department of Justice spokeswoman Cynthia J. Magnuson said.
