Kerry Snow '07 posted a thrilling singles victory in Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Kerry Snow '07 posted a thrilling singles victory in Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Mary Beth Winingham '10, Elizabeth Warneck '10 and Julie Zak '10 all finished the tournament 2-1. Despite finishing 1-2 for the tournament, Jesse Adler '10 had an impressive 6-0, 6-0 victory over an opponent from Army in B flight action.

Captains Kerry Snow '07 and Lindsay Winingham '07 also finished the weekend 1-2. Snow's second match was especially thrilling for the senior captain because she beat Dana Gordon of Rutgers in a suspenseful come-from-behind three-set victory in Arthur Ashe Stadium, home of the U.S. Open.

In C flight singles Caplan revenged losses in her first two games to finish 1-2 while Markovitz lost two tight matches to opponents from Boston College and Brown.

In D flight action, Jen Murray '09 finished 2-1. Snow called Murray's second match a weekend highlight because the whole team was on hand to watch her win the third set.

The Big Green experienced mixed results in A doubles action with the M. Winingham/Snow team posting a 2-1 record and the L. Winingham /Adler team going 1-2 for the weekend.

Besides the Caplan/Markovitz run to the quarterfinals, B flight doubles action also posted more mixed results. The Big Green team of J. Murray /Zak finished 0-3 while the Warneck/Danielle Murray '09 team finished 1-2 after beating an opponent from Brown in its last match.

The Big Green's performance during the tournament was especially admirable considering that all of the players competed in four matches on Saturday, the first day of play.

"Everyone was tired, but you couldn't see it on the court," Lindsay Winingham said. "Every girl fought just as hard the final day of the tournament as the first, which was really a testament to how hard this team competes."

Such endurance greatly contrasted with the lack of composure from other teams, including a Columbia doubles team that a line judge confronted for being lazy.

Because of a large fan base, the girls also experienced great times off the court. "It was a lot of fun to have a lot of parents, friends, and family supporting us ... and contributing to our cumulative highest intake of cookies during one weekend," said Snow.

Most importantly, the tournament gave the Big Green an opportunity to compete with schools Dartmouth does not normally meet, including some of the top teams in the country. The Big Green women return to action on their home courts on Friday, Oct. 20 when Dartmouth hosts the ITA Regional at the Boss Tennis Center.
