Greek Houses await return of many alums

A week after inducting new members, many Greek houses will be welcoming back alumni over Homecoming weekend. Whether via barbecues or late- night parties, most of the societies actively welcome back former brothers and/or sisters in one way or another.

Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity is holding a Centennial Celebration, comprised of several events commemorating the 100 years since their founding in 1906. The first of their many events begins with a reception scheduled from noon to 4 p.m. on Oct. 13, followed by a second reception after the bonfire.

Alpha Theta coed fraternity plans to throw its signature Seven Deadly Sins party Friday night, which numerous alumni attend according to Charles Cunningham, Alpha Theta's president.

Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Alpha Delta fraternities also have alumni receptions scheduled that night.

Alpha Phi Alpha continues their Centennial Celebration with a tailgate party scheduled for Oct. 14 at 9:30 a.m. There is also a Young Alumni Pregame Tailgate scheduled at 11 a.m., as well as a postgame tailgate, for alumni from the classes of 1992 to 2006, hosted by the class of 2006.

Sigma Delta sorority has scheduled an alumni brunch for Saturday morning.

"We generally get a turnout of about 20 alums, plus another 20 sisters, which provides a good intimate setting for people to see each other," Sigma Delt alumni chair Alix Cody said. "The majority of alums who come back are young alums, so often they are back to see sisters they knew when they were at school."

Alpha Chi Alpha fraternity has scheduled a barbecue at their house for alumni and friends at 10 a.m.

Alpha Xi Delta sorority has a brunch over the weekend to welcome back alumni as well.

Kappa Delta Epsilon sorority is hosting a breakfast at the house on Saturday morning and then attending the game with the alumni, according to President Lorraine Buhannic '07.

After the game Alpha Theta, Phi Delta Alpha fraternity and SAE are all each hosting alumni receptions. Alpha Theta is open all weekend to alumni, who are greeted by large portions of the current Membership in an informal setting, according to Cunningham.

Alpha Phi Alpha continues their Centennial Celebration with a Homecoming dinner at 6 p.m., followed by a Homecoming jam at Cutter/Shabazz Hall.

"The purpose of the event is to reconnect sisters and provide a place for alums to center themselves while up for a big weekend such as Homecoming," said Cody regarding Sigma Delt's Homecoming events. "New members will definitely be invited to the event, and are encouraged to come and meet people, especially this year since they will have just joined the house and are getting to know everything about it."

"Unfortunately since we're on probation we won't be having any official alumnae events," Whitney Dickerson '07, president of Kappa Kappa Gamma said.

Other newer Greek societies, like Alpha Phi, do not yet have alumni. "However, there are quite a few Alpha Phi alumnae from other schools who live in the area," said Lauren Orr '08, director of chapter events. "We've been in close contact with them since the winter, and we're planning an alumnae brunch for later this month to maintain that relationship."
