Frats, sororities dole out bids

Fraternities and sororities handed out bids Saturday, Sunday and Monday, ending the week-long rush process this fall. While fraternities generally received numbers comparable to previous years', sororities received fewer members per house with the addition of Alpha Phi, the seventh sorority, and a smaller group of female rushees this year.

At press time, Alpha Delta fraternity had 26 men sink their bids; Alpha Chi Alpha fraternity, 18; Psi Upsilon fraternity, 16; Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, 27; Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, 13; Chi Heorot fraternity, 28; Theta Delta Chi fraternity, 22; Chi Gamma Epsilon fraternity, 26; Kappa Kappa Kappa fraternity, 18; Sigma Nu fraternity, 15; and Phi Delta Alpha fraternity, 22.

Bones Gate fraternity declined to comment on this year's number of sunk bids. Representatives from Gamma Delta Chi fraternity, which traditionally inducts many more members in the winter and spring during the football offseason, could not be reached at press time.

Kappa Delta Epsilon sorority, Delta Delta Delta sorority and Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority each had 37 women sink their bids, reaching their maximum quotas. Sigma Delta sorority had 35 bids sunk, also reaching its maximum quota. Epsilon Kappa Theta sorority extended 24 bids, Alpha Xi Delta sorority extended 36 bids and Alpha Phi sorority extended 22 bids.

Each of the six older sororities that participated in rush extended fewer bids with the addition of Alpha Phi this year. Tri-Delt, KDE, Sigma Delt and Kappa each offered 49 bids last year, while Alpha Xi offered 39 and Theta offered 31. The addition of Alpha Phi to the rush process divided women rushing into seven groups rather than six, resulting in the reduced number of bids extended by the six sororities that participated in rush last year.

Heorot had six more bids sunk than last year, SAE had seven more and Chi Gam had eight more. Tri-Kap had 14 fewer bids sunk than last year, though Tri-Kap President Harris Chung '07 said that only 18 bids were sunk two years ago. Other houses received numbers similar to those from last year's rush.

While Heorot Rush co-Chair Rob Esposito '07 said that the rise in bids sunk at Heorot was because of "solid representation from ... traditionally Heorot sports teams." Chi Gam President Steve Perry '07 attributed the increase in Chi Gam's number of bids to a change in the house's character.

"We really tried to get some different types of guys," Perry said in a BlitzMail message. "We wanted a more diversified house. We always have, and still do get almost all the baseball players every year and they're a huge part of the house, but we tried to go beyond that and get guys from all around campus. I also think that we've been working hard to get the word out that we're a house where anyone can have a lot of fun, and some of the bad reputations that we had in the past are starting to fade."
