Daily Debriefing

Back to School time is not only a busy time for students, but apparently for condom companies as well. Jim Daniels, vice president of marketing at Trojan listed the back-to-school season as a good time for recruiting young customers in an article for The New York Times. Companies such as Trojan and Durex are diversifying marketing strategies in order to attract the attention of young buyers. Trojan has also increased its online and in print fall-advertising in order to reach schools that will not allow Trojan on-site for programming. On Tuesday, the company released a Sexual Health Report Card in which 100 randomly selected public and private schools were ranked on how they provided sexual health information to their students. Yale University placed first and Brigham Young Univeristy finished last while Dartmouth came in 63rd place.

The National Center for Research Resources, a part of the National Institutes of Health, granted $11,985,835 to Dartmouth Medical School's Center for Molecular, Cellular and Translational Immunological Research. The grant is one of 11 awarded to increase research capacity and enhance competitiveness in underserved states. The awards, totalling $117.3 million, were given in support of biomedical research across the country. "These awards will develop core research facilities and provide essential mentoring opportunities for young investigators working in traditionally underfunded states, so that they can eventually compete independently for NIH funding," Acting Director of NCRR Barbara Alving said.

Sustainable Dartmouth hosted the second installation of its first annual Sustainable Move-In Sale on Sunday in Collis Common Ground. The sale included dorm room accessories such as furniture, storage containers, bookshelves and appliances donated by students who moved out this past spring in support of recycling and waste reduction. The first sale of the fall took place only for first-year students on Sept. 12 and 13 in Tindle Lounge. Sustainable Dartmouth was created in the fall of 2005 after Jim Merkel was named Dartmouth's Sustainability Coordinator.
