THE LIST

Why is Dartmouth's style evolution so mind-bogglingly slow? My theory: we're all out looking for play and students, male and female, fear that if they wear something risky or fashion-forward they'll scare off their love-interest. So we cling to safe style. That's crap! Be gutsy! Here are three new directions that fashion is taking this spring/summer for women that you should be brave and try:

  1. It's a shirt, it's a dress, it's your new best friend.

So classic, so flattering, so easy to dress up or down. I'd be okay owning just a white shirt dress and swapping accessories every day. They're a simple, easy item so they beg you to add fun details. They are essentially shapeless so they look best belted to create curves. Add a collared shirt, with a popped collar for a unique look. Don't hate me, its true.

  1. Lace it up ladies

Lace has been around forever, it's universally a feminine fabric and its making its bazillionth surge in fashion this spring. It is neglected at Dartmouth, but it should not be. Try lace camisoles, lace under skirts or as an alternative to ubiquitous black tights, lace leggings look great under everything. I've also seen lace worn in a strip as a pretty belt ...

  1. Sorry, kids, low rise is out.

Gasp! But what about looking cute and showing some skin? Well, to be honest its no great loss for 99 percent of us. Honestly, who has glass-cutting hip bones and a perfectly flat stomach? But everyone has a waist! And this season its meant to be shown off. Try sporting a belt with a pair of high-waisted pants with sleek, tucked in tops la Katherine Hepburn. Put a wide belt at your natural waist over a sundress, shirt-dress, long sweater, or oxford. Yes, I've mentioned belts three times now, you caught me. I might be obsessed with them. You should be too.
