Track tackles opponents in Grand Canyon state

Over spring break, the men and women's track and field team traveled to Arizona for their annual spring training trip and swept competition away.

The team competed in two meets while training in Arizona: one for multi-eventers and one for the rest of the team.

At the Desert meet, Mustafa Abdur-Rahim '04, despite a strained shoulder, managed an NCAA-qualifying performance in the decathlon with 7719-points.

"I was pretty satisfied with my performance," Abdur-Rahim said. "It's been really hard pole-vaulting and throwing the javelin (because of the injury). So I knew I would have two under par events so I tried not to expect too much and just go out to get an NCAA qualifier. That's what I did so I was happy with that."

Abdur-Rahim earned the ECAC Divisions I Men's Field Athlete of the Week for his performance at the Desert meet. The only other Dartmouth male to compete in the decathlon, Tyler Koskenoja '07, placed third with a score of 6516.

On the women's side, Kelsey Wiegmann '06 won the heptathlon with 4,919 points and was named the ECAC Division I Women's Track Co-Athlete of the Week.

"I think we were all pretty pleased with how the team performed in Arizona," Wiegmann said. "We always have a relaxed mentality when we're competing in Arizona over break, so to leave with decent times, marks and scores was really exciting."

In the heptathlon, sisters Matthan Chatterton-Richmond '06 and Jadah Chatterton-Richmond '07 captured third and fourth place finishes with 4375 and 4334 points, respectively.

First-year competitors Cassandre Tanner '08, Kara Pydynkowski '08 and Micaela Carwell '08 were seventh, ninth and 10th respectively.

At the Arizona State Invitational, Sean Furey '05 won the javelin with a Dartmouth-record-breaking performance of 241-2, surpassing the second-place finish by more than 35 feet.

Harry Norton '08 finished second place in the men's 3000-meter run in 8:35:35. Teammate Mike Carmody '08 was fourth in the men's 400-meter race.

In the women's steeplechase, classmates Susan Dunklee '08 and Lauren Moser '08 finished third and fourth respectively in 11:15:20 and 11:16:98.

Meredith Curtis '06 finished third in the women's 3,000-meter run while Megan Olds '06 was fourth in the 1,500 meter run.

Tessa Clare '05 was third in the high jump with a 5-7 leap while Randall McKnight '08 finished third in the triple jump with 45-3 .

The Big Green returns to action on April 9th when it competes at the Penn Invitational.
