Lady laxers lament first loss of season to No. 5 BU

It was a hard day for newly ranked No. 2 Dartmouth women's lacrosse, who experienced their first loss of the season, ending a 13-game winning streak. The Ivy League Champions faced off against No. 5 Boston University Wednesday evening, resulting in a disappointing 10-9 loss.

The Boston University Terriers came out surprisingly strong, scoring the first three goals of the game. With just 30 seconds off the clock Boston University's Mary Beth Miller ripped one past Big Green goalkeeper Devon Wills '06. The next seven minutes saw two more Boston goals by Kaitlyn Cuneo and Lindsay Lewis.

Eight minutes into the first half, the Big Green offense took charge.

Junior Annie Leibovitz and freshman Kristen Barry potted two goals back to back bringing the score to 3-2. However, BU ripped two more goals, to further increase their lead. Dartmouth senior Katieanne Christian fought back with a pair of consecutive goals, bringing Dartmouth within one with only ten minutes left in the first half. Unfortunately Lauren Morton and Jenny Hauser scored two more for the Terriers to make it 7-4 at the break. The Big Green headed for the locker room trailing at the half for the first time all season.

The Big Green made a valiant comeback in the second half with goals from Jen Pittman '07 and Whitney Douthett '07. Barry scored two more goals in the second half, along with one from Christian giving them both three for the day. With 12:22 left in the second half Dartmouth's Douthett, Barry and Christian ripped three to the back of the Terriers' net, tying the game at 9-9. The Big Green were able to hold BU and maintain the score of the game until the last 1:39 as BU's Lindsay Lewis scored her third goal of the game giving the Terriers a 10-9 victory. The Terriers now move to a 14-1 record as the Big Green goes to 13-1.

Earlier this week, however senior Katieanne Christian was named the Ivy League's offensive co-player of the week for women's lacrosse.

With three goals, Christian helped lead the Big Green to a 12-9 victory over Princeton, clinching the 2005 Ivy League title. Christian also contributed four ground balls, three draw controls and one caused turnover. Two of her goals came in the first half, as the two teams played to a 6-6 deadlock. In the second half. Christian completed the hat trick with 9:31 to go, giving the Big Green an 11-8 lead. Christian brought herself closer to an all-time at Dartmouth record. She is now tied for seventh in goals with 111 and is 11th in career points with 127.

The Big Green takes action again next Wednesday, May 4, hosting Boston College in a 6 p.m. game at Scully"Fahey Field.
