The Hanover Police are investigating several related BB-gun shootings -- allegedly perpetrated by a College freshman -- that occurred outside Butterfield Hall in the past week, Chief Nicholas Giaccone said.
Pellets from the serial sniper's gun left at least one student wounded early Monday morning behind the dormitory.
Michele Nudelman '05 said she was near the blue light safety telephone outside of Butterfield on her way home from Epsilon Kappa Theta sorority when a lead pellet struck the back of her left leg.
The shots appeared to have been fired from the roof of a building nearby and were apparently not isolated to Monday morning -- Brennan Mallonee '04 told The Dartmouth she believed that the sniper's fire narrowly missed her on Friday afternoon.
Although two sniper suspects have been identified as Dartmouth students, their names have not yet been released. Safety and Security, Dean of Upperclass Students Sylvia Langford and Hanover Police have, however, assured Nudelman that the two students have been caught, she said.
In Nudelman's report to Safety and Security, she recounted that, upon impact, she turned around, shouted, "What the hell?" and saw two innocent passersby walking between Alpha Xi Delta sorority and Zeta Psi fraternity.
Nudelman subsequently heard two more shots fired, one of which sounded like it hit the snow. The other sounded as if it hit metal. After the shots, Nudelman hurried inside and called Safety and Security.
Mallonee similarly said she was walking near Butterfield when she "heard something hit the parking lot sign right behind" her and "guessed it was a BB." She heard two more shots as she sped up to round a corner onto Webster Avenue, presumably obscuring the sniper's line of sight. On Monday morning, she offered her account to officers from Safety and Security and Hanover Police, who were listening to Nudelman's story behind Butterfield Hall.
Giaccone confirmed the occurence of the shooting incident and said an investigation is underway. "Detectives are working on it," he said.
According to Giaccone, however, no one has been officially arrested as of Wednesday.
As for Nudelman's leg, she said, "It's fine, it's a little black and blue. It swelled up afterwards but now it's gone down."
