Greek leaders elect new moderator, events chair

Greek leaders gathered Tuesday night in Silsby Hall to elect two of their peers as new executive members of the Greek Leadership Council.

Although the Council chose Taylor Cornwall '06 as moderator, it could not agree on a public relations chair.

While a tied vote prevented the election of the public relations chair, the results will be announced following a meeting of the GLC today.

Cornwall, the newly elected GLC moderator and a member of Phi Delta Alpha fraternity, will lead the weekly executive council meetings and the biweekly general council meetings. He will also set the organization's agenda.

"We will work to foster Greek unity and communication between sororities, fraternities and co-eds, actively sponsor new cooperative events within houses, the campus and the community at large and show the positive aspects of Greek life on campus," Cornwall said.

In addition, Cornwall will serve as a representative of the Greek system to the Dartmouth community and meet with administrators to discuss Greek issues.

Lauren Gorecki '07, the newly elected social events manager and a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, will assist Greek houses in planning events and will work on projects involving Greek houses and the community.

"I look forward to facilitating a unified Greek system at Dartmouth through promoting integration between houses," Gorecki said.

Gorecki will also be responsible for working with Safety and Security to coordinate the student monitor walk-through program.

The GLC serves as a unifying body for all of Dartmouth's Greek houses and works to coordinate various Greek-related events.

Membership in the GLC is comprised of the presidents of the Greek organizations at Dartmouth, sub-council presidents of the GLC and an executive committee.

The four-person executive committee is made up of a moderator, social events manager, public relations manager and treasurer. The outgoing executive committee selects the treasurer and the members of the GLC elect the other three officers.

All candidates for the executive committee must be members of a Greek organization and must be nominated by one of the GLC presidents. Each interested candidate gives a speech in front of current GLC members, who then vote on the candidates.

The public relations chair takes notes at GLC meetings and helps edit the Greek Times newsletter that is published each term. The chair is also responsible for publicizing GLC events around campus.

Outgoing GLC executives will select the fourth executive committee position, the treasurer, tomorrow.

The treasurer is the chief fiscal officer of the GLC and manages the budget of the organization.

"Though only two positions were elected and the other two will be chosen at the GLC executive meeting tomorrow morning, the talented and enthusiastic candidates that showed up today make me optimistic for the next few terms," Cornwall said.

"As a diverse group of executives, we will be able to incorporate ideas from around the Greek community," he added.

The four new members of the executive committee will assume their roles in the GLC beginning Spring term.
