Chi Gam party shut down early

Safety and Security shut down a dance party at Chi Gamma Epsilon fraternity at approximately 1:45 a.m. Saturday morning after receiving multiple calls from inside the fraternity asking for assistance with dangerously intoxicated students.

As masses of students were evacuating the fraternity, Webster Avenue became very crowded, and an unidentified, dark sport-utility vehicle whose lights were turned off, hit a sophomore girl. The SUV subsequently drove away without stopping.

The girl suffered "minor lacerations" from the hit-and-run, according to Hanover Police Communications Officer Timothy Goodwin.

"I've never seen so many people that drunk in one place at one time," partygoer Amy Ding '08 said of Chi Gam.

Ding witnessed one of the overly inebriated students, a sophomore girl, vomiting in excess.

"She was gripping the sides of a toilet bowl with her lips on it, unresponsive," Ding said.

When Sarah Ayres '06, a friend of the sick girl, tried to find the phone number for Safety and Security, Chi Gam brothers tried to convince her not to call from the fraternity so as to avoid sanctions, Ding said.

"Chi Gam brothers tried to convince her [Ayres] to get her out of there and not call S&S," Ding said.

Ayres eventually made the call from the fraternity.

Another girl, a freshman, was also sufficiently intoxicated to warrant a call for help, but in this instance, Chi Gam brothers were the ones who made the "Good Samaritan" call to Safety and Security.

"She was draped over the banister," Andrea Palmer '08 said. "This girl was clearly, clearly not all right."

The spirit behind the College's rule concerning Good Samaritan calls is that neither the caller nor the sick individual should be punished.

Chi Gam president Stephen Clarke '05 pointed out that "there were three Good Sam[aritan] calls that night, and we assisted on all of them."

"Our interest was in making sure that these girls were taken care of," Clarke said.

At least two of the girls taken from Chi Gam had allegedly consumed some alcohol at a cocktail party held at Phi Delta Alpha fraternity earlier in the evening, according to one of the girls taken away by Safety and Security.

Safety and Security decided to take over the party once they determined that Chi Gam "was having difficulty controlling the party," College Proctor Harry Kinne said.

"We talked to the brothers, and the brothers helped us shut the party down," Kinne said.

Once Safety and Security took over the fraternity, an officer placed himself behind the bar, kicking everyone out of the basement. Another officer was positioned at the base of the stairway, limiting traffic only to those going upstairs to grab their coats.

One of the girls was taken to the emergency room at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, and the other two went to Dick's House.
