College places 4 frats on 2-week probation

Four campus fraternities are paying the price for alcohol violations during sophomore summer by beginning fall term on probation. Alpha Delta, Chi Heorot, Kappa Kappa Kappa and Chi Gamma Epsilon fraternities are all on social probation for two weeks beginning Sept. 22.

The majority of the infractions committed by the fraternities came in the form of providing alcohol to minors and possessing alcoholic punch, according to the Office of Undergraduate Judicial Affairs. In addition to serving a probationary period, many of the frats are also required to address these violations through new member education policies and other risk management programs.

Social probation prevents a fraternity from hosting registered parties, having alcohol in social spaces, and holding weekly fraternity meetings during the probationary period.

With a large number of fraternities out of commission for the first weekend of fall term, fraternities not on probation are expecting more students at their houses over the next two weeks. Phi Delta Alpha is planning a college-sanctioned open party for Saturday night and projects above-average attendance.

"Because these frats are on probation it compresses the same amount of people in fewer houses," Phi Delt secretary Joe Rago '05 said. "As a result, we're expecting more people at our registered event this weekend."

It remains to be seen how the absence of four frats with strong social presences on campus will affect the first two weeks of the term. The freshman class, for example will miss out on what have traditionally been staple social events of fall term, including the Tri-Kap and Chi Gam dance parties, usually held on the first weekend of fall term.

"Tri Kap parties are known for being a good time," Rachel Casseus '06 said. "I'll just have to bump and grind in my room."

Chi Gam, however, is already planning a party to compensate for not having their standard party tomorrow night.

"We get off probation on the sixth," Chi Gam president Steve Clarke '05 said, "and plan on having a big dance party on the eighth."
