Ten million. That's the number of dollars the administration budget has expanded by in the last four years while academic, athletic and library funding has been cut.
That's the number that has been spent on more bureaucracy while beloved professors and athletic teams have come under the chopping block.
We need a Student Assembly led by a President who has shown himself willing to challenge that unacceptable status quo.
I'm running for Student Body President because I have the biggest vision for change at this College.
I'm very excited about changes in policy that fundamentally alter the relationship between Parkhurst and our student body, because that relationship needs change.
Election season is always characterized by a tide of good ideas and good intentions.
But we can't stop there. We must follow up with action.
When I was struggling through Marine Corps Officer boot camp down in the filthy swamps of Quantico, Va., I learned a little bit about working as a team and taking action. This is my plan for action:
I will establish a Student's Bill of Rights that expands the rights held by students and ensures that students can speak freely here, can expect privacy in their Blitzmail communications, and can expect to be treated with respect by law enforcement officials.
I will establish a beer can buyback program so the tons of aluminum waste that spills out of our Greek system can be recycled and bring revenue to the Greeks. Student services will become a priority under my administration: no more broken BlitzMail terminals.
I will restore the Community Service position to Student Assembly, expanding the Assembly's vision for helping others.
I will fight for those events and experiences like DOC Trip raids or the tennis ball throw that evoke a sense of Dartmouth spirit and make this community so unique.
I will sign a commitment of Greek support with Parkhurst, so we can open up our Greek system for more diverse and more vibrant types of CFS organizations.
I've set practical and pragmatic goals which dramatically increase the vision of the Assembly. These goals are just the beginning.
I've been involved in a lot at Dartmouth that's not the Assembly's: service work through Tucker, a faith community, a sports team, political activism, and just having a ridiculous time.
You all know I've run an energetic campaign for this position, but I hope you'll also consider me the candidate of the greatest substance.
I'm asking for concrete change at Dartmouth. I'm asking for a renewed vision of service.
I'm asking for your vote.
Please consider Jim Baehr on May 4 and May 5. Thank you.
