Hanover Police executed a search warrant at 52 1/2 Lebanon Street in connection with a College-related drug investigation. As the investigation is still under way, police declined further comment.
May 6, West Wheelock Street, 2:15 a.m.
Two College females, aged 20 and 21, were spotted walking on West Wheelock Street in the vicinity of Mass Row. Upon sight of a police cruiser, the 20-year-old, a junior, dropped a water bottle filled with a pink liquid to the ground. This aroused the suspicion of the officer, who determined after a brief investigation that the liquid was an alcohol beverage. The underage student was arrested for unlawful possession and given a court date, while the 21-year-old was placed in protective custody.
May 6, Observatory Road, 3:22 a.m.
A Hanover Police officer on regular patrol noticed a group of three College students walking in front of Alpha Delta fraternity and turned around to drive by them. As the cruiser was turning around, one male member of the group began to walk away from East Wheelock Street towards Ripley-Woodward-Smith. When the officer got out of the car, the 19-year-old sophomore started to run. The officer was able to catch the intoxicated individual after a short chase and arrested him for unlawful possession by consumption. As the arrestee is a "frequent flyer" with Hanover Police, he will not be given the option of alcohol diversion. It is assumed that his previous police experiences are what prompted him to run.
May 6, Lebanon Street, 9:52 a.m.
Hanover Hot Tubs reported a burglary had taken place at the establishment overnight. Apparently the thieves gained entry by smashing out a back window and stole an undisclosed amount of money. Police detectives are currently investigating the incident. This is the second burglary on Lebanon Street in the past month, following a robbery at a barbershop.
May 6, Rope Ferry Road, 10:24 a.m.
The 19-year-old sophomore who was arrested outside AD earlier that morning decided to "act out" by creating a disturbance at Dick's House, where he was being held following his booking. Dick's House called Hanover Police, who transported the unruly individual to the Grafton County jail. This second incident, however, did not produce any new charges.
May 8, Verona Avenue, 1:11 a.m.
Police pulled over and arrested 24-year-old William Benedict, an assistant Dartmouth swimming coach, under charges of driving under the influence and illegal possession of drugs in a motor vehicle. He was given a court date of June 15; police refused to comment further because the matter is still pending.
May 9, Mass Row, 12:09 a.m.
A 19-year-old male '06 first seen stumbling in the vicinity of Thayer Dining Hall, walked onto the street waving food containers in each of his hands, drawing the attention of Hanover Police. An officer pulled up to inquire about his status, and determined that the individual was intoxicated. This was rather easy as the male's speech was slurred and he told a story about helping a friend out by drinking half of a beer. He was arrested for unlawful possession of alcohol and possession of false identification.
May 9, West Wheelock Street, 2:12 a.m.
Hanover Police noticed a suspicious male weaving down the sidewalk of West Wheelock Street near School Street, carrying a bamboo lawn candle. When the individual, a 19-year-old freshman, saw the police, he attempted to hide the candle behind his back. The male, who had spent time at Panarchy that night, appeared to be under the influence. The officer thought he smelled vomit, a charge the student denied. The officer then asked what the student had in his pockets, which were bulging noticeably. The student replied that his wallet was in his left pocket and his underwear was in his right pocket. When asked why he was carrying his underwear, the student replied that he had had diarrhea all day. The officer then inquired if the freshman had defecated in his pants, to which the student replied in the negative, claiming it was just "a bad fart." He was arrested for illegal possession of alcohol by consumption, and given either a day in court or the option of an alcohol diversion class.
