Student Assembly votes to subsidize campus elections

Matters of the Membership and Internal Affairs Committee, which reviews and recommends applicants for membership to College Committees, dominated Tuesday night's rather brief Student Assembly meeting.

The Assembly unanimously passed an MIAC-sponsored proposal to subsidize the cost of campus elections, which are just weeks away on May 4 and 5. Student body president and vice president campaigns have traditionally been expensive endeavors, so the assembly voted to reimburse candidates in an effort to disperse money among them. Students running for student body president and vice president who spend beyond $35 may be reimbursed for additional spending up to $125, the campaign spending cap.

Elisa Donnelly '07 was elected to the MIAC last night, joining Noah Riner '06, Anthony Keating '06, Russ Lane '06 and Ben Waters '06. She will serve on the committee this term. "She's one of the hardest working and most involved '07s I know," Jim Baehr, student organizations committee chair, said.

In other news, the Student Organizations Committee reported its progress on a project to uncover religious stained-glass windows in Rollins Chapel. Committee members met with College Provost Barry Scherr to discuss and identify figures for the project, as well as to look into the possibility of the windows being recognized by the National Register of Historic Places as historically significant artwork. Furthermore, a Hillel representative, Arielle Ring '07, has signed on to join the project.

The Student Services Committee is currently working through the red tape to potentially set up a campus mtvU channel, MTV's new college based network. According to the station's website, "mtvU is dedicated to every aspect of college life -- from the music to the news to student life to campus events. The channel is designed to reflect the fast pace of students' lifestyles, and to reach them everywhere they hang out."
