The Dartmouth

From a Responsible Investor

To the Editor:

The column by Justin Ruben '95 raises important questions regarding the social responsibilities of colleges and universities for what is done with their investments (The Dartmouth, April 20).

Dartmouth has recently begun to address this issue with the formation of a new committee, the Advisory Committee on Investor Responsibility, which I chair. The membership of this committee comprises undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, alumni, and administrators. Our charge is to examine Dartmouth's investment policies and to exercise Dartmouth's proxy voting rights in publicly held companies.

One of the first results of our work is a new disclosure policy that will make an updated list of Dartmouth's holdings in publicly traded companies available to all members of the Dartmouth community. That list will be available beginning next week for review at the Investment Office.

ACIR has just begun its work in earnest. We understand how important it is to hear the views of students, faculty, and alumni like Justin Ruben. To begin to accomplish this, ACIR will be hosting a conversation with the community at the Hinman Forum at 4:00 p.m., May 12. We look forward to a productive exchange on socially responsible investing by the College.
