S&S steps up campus patrols

Safety and Security will increase its presence this weekend as more students go out to party or partake in Carnival events, College Proctor Harry Kinne said. But, according to Hanover Police Chief Nicholas Giaccone, the police department is planning for a typical weekend.

"We will have high visibility, and we will have extra people on," Kinne said of the entire weekend.

Safety and Security will be operating with a full crew of personnel at busy times throughout the weekend and will always have at least two extra patrols running each night, both on foot and in vans, Kinne said.

"We're planning on being very visible this weekend, doing regular checks of all the events going on," Kinne said.

Additional presence will be seen in many places, including during the polar bear swim at Occom Pond, where an officer will be on duty.

According to Kinne, Winter Carnival, like Homecoming and Green Key weekends, sees increased activity and Safety and Security action. "It's usually much busier than a typical weekend, primarily related to the number of people on campus," he said.

Despite the large number of alumni returning to campus and numerous Carnival festivities, Giaccone said there was no need to step up police presence around campus. "Mostly it's the same as any other weekend," he said.

Giaccone said there would be no special preparations. He also said he did not necessarily expect an elevated level of incidents this weekend.

Kinne advised students to beware of the cold weather, which meteorologists predict might feel even colder with this weekend's wind.

Winter weather, snow and ice can cause students to call Safety and Security about personal injuries including cut lips and injured hands.

Kinne also recommended that students "do everything in moderation."

"We want everybody to have a safe and fun time. We would just encourage students to watch out for each other and to enjoy all the festivities," Kinne said.
