Police arrest 18 during Carnival

This year's Winter Carnival witnessed a total of 18 arrests by the Hanover Police Department, with eight Dartmouth students being charged with unlawful possession of alcohol. Another four were charged with College-related crimes, including false identification and the transport of alcohol by a minor.

According to Safety and Security reports , five arrests, 16 alcohol violations, including the arrests, nine accidental personal minor injuries and three fire safety violations took place.

In addition, at Sigma Nu fraternity Friday night, Hanover Police was called in to do an "ambulance assist on individual who was extremely intoxicated," according to Hanover Police Chief Nicholas Giaccone.

A male junior was taken to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center after Safety and Security received a "Good Samaritan" call from Sigma Nu.

"A student called about an incapacitated student, an ambulance showed up and a person was transported. Hanover Police also showed, which was routine for them on an ambulance call," added College Proctor Harry Kinne.

Sigma Nu refused to comment.

According to Giaccone, four police officers were present at the event.

"While the fire personnel were in the house retrieving the intoxicated person, a whole group of people congregated around the ambulance," Giaccone said, providing rationale for the seemingly large presence of officers on Webster Avenue Friday night.

"The party itself was a little out of control," Giaccone said.

The New Hampshire Liquor Commission was also in town Friday night, as the assigned local commission representative happened to be on duty, Giaccone said.

The College's current alcohol policy states that social organizations, including Sigma Nu, are required to register any event where 40 people or the number of members -- whichever is fewer -- will be present and alcohol will be served.

The fraternity's Early '80s party met registration requirements and was not in violation of this rule.

Sigma Nu is still under investigation for providing alcohol to minors, according to Hanover Police.

Still, in spite of Winter Carnival's police activity, "The weekend itself was probably not as busy as some of the other weekends we've had this year," Kinne said. "I think there were more people on campus. I would equate it to being on par with bonfire weekend."
