Big Green Bean to reopen by spring

The Big Green Bean, the popular campus nightspot whose closing last winter sparked a flurry of student protest, will reappear by the end of Winter term.

Student Assembly President Janos Marton '04, who spearheaded the campaign to reopen the Green Bean, said that the format of the caf will be slightly different than what upperclass students may have remembered from last year.

Instead of students giving their orders to servers, customers at the Green Bean will serve themselves and then pay at the cashier as they do at Collis Caf during the day.

Although certain logistics, such as how many nights a week the Green Bean will be open, have not been finalized, organizers of the Green Bean's reopening say they hope to please old and new students alike.

"I think it was one of the few spaces on campus where it didn't feel sterile. It felt warm, and I loved the music there," Paloma Wu '03 said.

"I would go because I think we need more options and variety at nighttime," said Luz Lomel '07.

Marton also led the Assembly in passing a resolution to authorize funds for uncovering the stained glass windows of Rollins Chapel.

Additional items of business included a future conference to improve town-gown relations, which will be arranged by Brett Martin '04.

Moreover, the Assembly members encouraged their contemporaries to apply to participate in the Ivy Leadership Summit.

Taking place this February in New York City, the summit offers spots for 20 students from each Ivy League school and will feature speeches by prominent politicians and business executives. Applications can be found at ils.ivycouncil.org.

The meeting, Student Assembly's first of the new year, was held Tuesday evening in the Collis Center.
