20 picked for Senior Executive Committee

The College released the names on Thursday of the 20 students selected to serve on the class of 2004 Senior Executive Committee, which is responsible for organizing all class events for the next five years.

The group will meet frequently throughout the Winter and Spring terms to organize class events, including Commencement, for which they will select the class marshals and flag bearers. After graduation they will be responsible for holding mini-reunions, managing the class newsletter and planning the fifth-year reunion in 2009, where new representatives will be selected.

The members of the class of 2004's SEC are David Anderson, Bradley Bate, Catherine Buck, Isabel Casariego, Geoffrey Colla, Laura Delaney, Kristina Eaton, Tim Fallon, Brian Ferguson, Frederica Ghesquiere, E. Amory Loring, Michael Newton, Cynthia O'Brien, Elizabeth Right, Melissa Sogard, Vadim Villarroel, Julie Webb, Cassie Welch, Kiva Wilson and Melana Yanos.

These 20 were chosen from a pool of 30 applicants. Twelve were elected on Jan. 13 in an online election open to members of the senior class and eight were appointed by a college selection committee. No distinction is made between those members elected and those appointed according to Assistant Director of Alumni Relations Jillian Gronski.

Applicants filled out an online application, which asked them to describe themselves, their Dartmouth experiences and why they believed the SEC was important.

The election did not go as smoothly as planned. At 9:30 a.m., 30 minutes after the election started, interim Basement president Edward Wei was alerted to a system error was allowing students to vote for only one candidate, instead of twelve. Wei reset the election and emailed everyone who had voted, requesting that they vote again.

Anderson, a leader of DREAM, said his interest in the committee came from his "desire to keep the class connected after graduation."

Bate agreed. "The next five years will be a time of transition for all of us, and I look forward to helping to lead the class of '04 through this period," he said.

While the committee does not yet have any immediate plans past commencement, they are meeting Wednesday to vote committee officer positions.
