The Dartmouth men's track and field team competed at two venues this past weekend. Many athletes traveled to Durham, N.H., to compete in the Outdoor Invitational hosted by the University of New Hampshire, while others went down to Miami University in Florida to enjoy fast times in great weather.
Nearby at the UNH Invitational, four men's field athletes won their respective events, bringing the Big Green to a first place finish. Competitors at UNH included Boston College, UConn, Maine and UMass-Lowell.
In the field, Mike Mozer '05 took first place in the discus with a throw of 142-4, as well as a second place finish in the shot put. Matt "Big Cat" Brown '05 took first in the shot put with a PR throw of 54-1, and he placed second in the discus.
In other field events, Joe Marucheck '04 took first in the triple jump with a mark of 44-0 3/4, and he picked up second place in the long jump with a jump of 22-8 1/2. Also, Sean Furey '04 came away with a first-place finish in the javelin with a hurl of 222-8. He was also second in the high jump.
Also excelling at UNH were Joe Shaw '03 and John Moran '05. Shaw finished second in the steeplechase, and Moran was runner-up in the hammer and 4-x-400 relay. Dartmouth won with 145 points, while UConn, Maine and UNH shared second place with 120 points.
A bit further south at Miami University, the Big Green faced tough competition at the Gatorade Invitational. Tyler Haney '03 posted the most successful finish in the 400 meters. He blazed a single lap in 47.64 to take second in the race.
In another successful finish, Haney and teammates Jeff Guenette '03, Mustafa Abdur-Rahim '04 and Ahmad Abdur-Rahim '04 combined their efforts to take second place in the 4-x-400 meter relay. They turned the relay in 3:17.79. Kansas State finished about four seconds faster, with a time of 3:13.62, to take first place in the event.
Ross Tucker '05, Guenette and Ahmad Abdur-Rahim posted other notable marks in some of the individual races. Tucker took seventh in the 1500 with a time of 3:59.28, Guenette took seventh in the 400 hurdles, and Abdur-Rahim was fifth in the long jump with a leap of 22-2 1/2.
The Big Green track and field teams are back in action this weekend at UConn, with the well-known and competitive Penn Relays but two weeks away.
