SA hopeful over fate of teams

The Dartmouth swim team may get a second chance, according to Student Assembly leaders, who are hopeful of a positive administrative reaction to Assembly plans to prevent the elimination of the swimming and diving teams. The plans, presented during last night's Assembly meeting, will be answered in a meeting with College officials Thursday evening.

"There might be some light at the end of the tunnel," said Amit Anand '03, Chair of the Assembly's Student Life Committee, in regards to private conversations he had recently had with Dean of the College James Larimore. Anand added that the administration had been, "really, really impressed" with the Assembly's efforts.

Student Body President Janos Marton '04 said that the administrators had been "truly receptive" to Assembly propositions and efforts regarding the swim team and that "compromise may be going on."

Anand said that administrators, including College President James Wright, Larimore, and Provost Barry Scherr, had been particularly impressed by the over 1,700 students who responded to the Assembly's student referendum. Anand said that this large number made clear that those who argue for the preservation of the swim team are not simply a "special interest group."

Parents of Dartmouth swimmers will also meet with administrators this Thursday to share their opinions and ideas on the administration's decision.

In response to outrage at the lack of student input in the decision to cut the swim team, the Assembly has obtained approval for a new student advisory committee on the College budget. Both Student Body Vice-President Julia Hildreth '05 and Marton expressed hope that this would help future Dartmouth students have a more active voice in the budget cutting process.

"There will likely be more budget cuts next year and the year after that as well, so this is the time to fight," Marton said.

The committee is officially set to start Monday, with the Assembly planning to send a Blitzmail message to students encouraging them to join the group.

As well as a night of discussion about the budget, it was a night of elections for the Assembly. Three new committee heads were elected, as well as two new members to the Membership and Internal Affairs Committee. Mark Herman '06 was also elected as Secretary of the Assembly, making him the first member of the Class of 2006 to be an executive member of the Assembly.

The Assembly also discussed creating a new position to deal exclusively with the Tom Dent Cabin. The delay in opening the Tom Dent Cabin, caused quite an outrage amongst the student body, according to Hildreth.

"People are pretty angry," Hildreth said.

The Assembly has also unveiled its new webpage and the new course guide. It is also testing a wake-up call service run through their new web page. The Beta version of the wakeup service is available for download.
