The Dartmouth varsity men's heavyweight crew team begins its fall campaign this weekend, as the team heads to the Stonehurst Capitol Regatta just outside of Rochester.
Coming off a successful trip to England this summer, the heavies are hoping to bring their success to this side of the Atlantic.
Coach Scott Armstrong, who prefers to focus on the all-important sprint season in the spring, utilizes the fall races as a testing ground for different lineups.
"We'll put some of the stronger guys into a top boat for the Head of the Charles and Stonehurst race to test out some combinations," Armstrong said. "But with a few guys' off-terms this fall, we'll be saving our best speed for the spring."
Armstrong added: "My goals for the fall are to establish a team mentality and work ethic that will carry us to a national championshipand [to] do lots of technical work."
Having lost co-captains John Raser '01 and Steve Simmerman '01 to graduation, Armstrong will not only be looking to replace these two port-side rowers, but he'll also be looking replace the voice of the boat, coxswain Katie Miller '01. Melissa Mowat '03, Becka Mamer '04 and Nick Blum '04 will be vying for the vacant coxswain's seat in the first boat this fall.
