Hawks trip up Big Green

The University of Hartford handed Dartmouth its second straight loss at Chase Field yesterday afternoon, shutting out the Big Green 2-0.

After an uneventful, scoreless first half, Dartmouth came out after the break looking focused and aggressive. The team generated a number of good plays, including a shot by Anne Peick '04 that was saved by the Hawks goalie, Anne Lise Nilseen.

Dartmouth's Julia Shields '04 tended the goal in the first half, making three solid stops, but came out at the halfway mark. Backup Anne Marbarger '05 came on for the second frame and looked solid early on in the half.

But it was Hartford's Tini Lyng who scored the game's first goal at 73:42 when she blasted a shot past Marbarger on a pass from Jeanette Akerlund. The Hawks scored again at 87:13 when Akerlund took a pass from Lyng and scored to give Hartford an insurance goal.

With less than three minutes left in the game, the Big Green furiously tried to get on the scoreboard, but time ran out before Dartmouth was able to create a shot.

Hartford dominated much of the game, outshooting Dartmouth, 15-5. The Hawks also controlled much of the field position war getting twice as many corner kicks as the Big Green, 6-3.

Marbarger finished the game with three stops for Dartmouth while Nilseen had to make only three in the entire game for the shutout.

Dartmouth falls to 1-2, 0-1 Ivy, and Hartford moves to 4-2, and extends their winning streak to four. This was Dartmouth's second straight loss at home. Last Sunday, Dartmouth was shut out by Ivy League rival Princeton, 1-0.

In further Ivy action Dartmouth will face the University of Pennsylvania on Saturday at Penn. The Quakers are 4-0-1 and haven't faced any league opponents at this time.

Penn had its own tune-up yesterday as the Quakers edged local foe LaSalle, 1-0. The shutout was the third straight for Penn and goalkeeper Vanessa Scotto.

With the game's lone score at 24:57, Quaker freshman Rachelle Snyder grabbed the team lead in scoring. Penn dominated the whole way, as they pounded 10 shots on the Explorer's goal.

Scotto had a nearly clean day, as she faced only one shot from the opposition. The Red and Blue hope to continue Scotto's streak of over 320 scoreless minutes this Saturday.

In other Ivy League action this week, the Princeton Tigers notched their fourth shutout of the year in a 3-0 romp over Stony Brook. The first goal wasn't registered until the 62nd minute when freshman Esmeralda Negron pounded one home for the victory.

Negron knocked home a gorgeous cross from Joan Cundley for the score. Junior Alex Fiore added an insurance goal less than two minutes later.

Janine Willis popped home the final tally 10 minutes later and goalie Catherine Glenn was forced to make only one stop. Lori Nelson registered eight saves for the Seawolves in the loss.

At West Point on Tuesday, the Elis of Yale were downed by back-to-back second half goals against the Cadets of Army.

Army's Kelly Schachtler tallied the game's first goal on a pass from Emily Nay at 61:29. The Cadets then added another score nine minutes later when Shavonne Hennessy knocked in the eventual game-winner.

The Bulldogs' Erin Ruck tallied a late goal at 83:26. Both teams hurled a lot at the net, as the shots were even at 14.

Yale falls to 3-2 on the season while Army evens its record at 3-3-1.
