To the Editor:
It is hazardous to criticize cartoons ("where's your sense of humor, professor?"), but Fred Ware's "Kicker" cartoon in Thursday's D has goaded me to take the risk. He managed to exhibit both ignorance and xenophobia in questioning the competence of visiting economics faculty from other countries. The Economics Department is proud to have invited professionals from Germany, England, Korea, and Israel to teach many of our courses, just as we are pleased to have regular professors who have come from abroad (Italy, England, Israel, Slovenia, and India). Several of our visiting international faculty have received outstanding teaching evaluations from Dartmouth students, and it borders on libel to suggest that any of them lack command of English or knowledge of economics.
