W. golf winds up fourth in Ivy tourney

Dartmouth freshman Shannon Rogers fell one stroke short of earning first team All-Ivy honors at the Ivy League women's golf championship, held this past Sunday and Monday at Forsgate Country Club in Jamesburg, NJ.

In singles play, which was hindered by Sunday's blustery conditions and the always unpredictable greens, Rogers finished ninth with a two-day total of 81-79=160, just shy of the 159 mark needed to finish in the top seven and therefore qualify for All-Ivy Recognition.

"Shannon definitely played great golf, considering how little we have been able to practice due to the weather and the cancelled BC Invitational which was supposed to take place earlier this month," said Vivian Lee '03, the team's captain.

Fellow freshman Katy Birchall finished 14th with an 83-84=167, while sophomore Erika Fry also finished in the top 20, placing 20th with an 89-86=175. Princeton's

Julia Allison was the top individual finisher with a 73-76=149, five strokes better than teammate Esty Dwek's 78-76=154. Adrienne Gill added a 79-80=159 to add a third top seven finisher to the Tigers.

The Big Green team, comprised of Birchall, Fry, Nellie Jeon '02, Rogers, and Lee, finished fourth in the six-team field with a combined score of 683 over 36 holes. With the 1-2 punch of Allison and Dwek, Princeton finished first, with a low score of 625. Yale with 634 and Brown with 640 finished second and third respectively, while Harvard (703) and Penn (706) rounded out the other two teams.

Next up for the team is the Northeast Championship, which begins this Saturday and continues onto Sunday at Amherst, Mass.

"I think we have a very good chance to win this weekend. We're playing two courses that we're familiar with (the Orchards and Amherst Country Club), and this past weekend I think has prepared us for what we're going to face at Amherst," said Lee.
