Tigers hold on to Ivy lead

With the women's lacrosse season in the Ivy League heating up, the Big Green moved into a tie for second in the league this past weekend. Let's take a look at how Dartmouth's competition performed.

Brown

Brown freshman Meredith Goodell and junior tri-captain Tonie Karbe each tallied a hat-trick to lead Brown to a 16-3 victory over Columbia in women's lacrosse last Saturday.

The Bears scored just eight seconds into the game and then ran off another four goals before Meredith Corkery finally got the Lions on the board at 17:37 to make it 6-1. Brown closed the first half out with a four-goal run to extend their lead to 10-1.

On Tuesday, Brown added a come-from-behind victory over Vanderbilt led by a career-high four goals from sophomore Robin Juliano.

Columbia

The Lions received a harsh drubbing at the hands of the Brown Bears on Saturday. The Light Blue fell behind 10-1 at the half and never made a serious challenge to the Bears.

The Lions took on Yale yesterday and suffered an nearly identical fate. Once again they fell behind 10-1 at the half, but this time they had a worse second half, eventually coming off the field to an 18-2 defeat.

With the loss Columbia falls to 0-6 in the Ivies, 2-9 overall.

Harvard

The Crimson, owners of seventh place in the Ivy League standings, scored first against Penn on Saturday only to see the Quakers score six unanswered goals and cruise to victory from that point on.

Alli Harper was Harvard's star of the game with a hat trick, but that was not enough to stop Penn who seemed to score the instant momentum swung towards the Crimson.

Next up for the women of Harvard is a trip to first-place Princeton on Saturday. The entire Ivy League is rooting for Harvard to knock off the Tigers and open the way for the rest of the league to grab a league title.

Penn

The University of Pennsylvania women's lacrosse team scored six unanswered goals in the first half and went on to a 13-8 victory over Harvard on Saturday.

Penn blitzed the Crimson after falling behind 1-0 and wound up with an 8-2 halftime lead that they never relinquished.

On Monday, Penn notched its fourth straight win behind Horton who scored two goals in a 6-5 triumph over Rutgers. Traci Marabella added a goal and two assists as Penn improved its overall record to 7-5 with a 2-2 mark in the Ancient Eight.

Princeton

Princeton defeated Yale 13-8 on Saturdayto improve its record to 8-1 overall and 3-0 in the Ivy League. The win gave the Tigers sole possession of first place in the Ivy League.

Princeton's Kim Smith scored the first three goals of the game and six altogether to pace the Tigers. Lauren Simone added a hat trick for the victors.

On Tuesday, the Tigers pounded the Temple Owls to the tune of a 15-7 victory.

Simone racked up six points, but the real show was Smith, who netted her 100th career goal during the rainstorm that continued for the entire game.

The win pushes Princeton's non-league record to 9-0 as they prepare to host Harvard this weekend.

Yale

The Bulldogs lost a 13-8 duel with Princeton for control over first place in the Ivy League on Saturday.

After giving up the first three goals of the game to Smith and then falling behind 8-2 early in the second half, the Eli's put up a fierce rally to close the gap to 8-7. Kate Flatley led the charge, scoring twice.

However, Smith netter her sixth at 14:36 to give Princeton a 9-7 lead, and the Tigers pushed the lead late.

Yale took its frustrations out on Columbia yesterday, however, punishing the Lions with an 18-2 thrashing. Yale ked 10-1 at the half and saw only eight shots for the entire game.

Sarah Queener scored four goals and added three assists for the Bulldogs, who are now alone in second place in the Ivy League with a 4-1 mark.
