Princeton leads pack as Ivy League season heats up

The men's lacrosse season is underway and the Big Green begin Ivy League play this weekend. Here's a look at how teams around the Ivies are faring this spring.

Dartmouth

The Big Green defeated Denver University on the road last Sunday in a highly contested 7-6 battle. Sophomore attacker Scott Roslyn scored a hat trick on the day, while goalie Mike Gault '03 saved 15 shots to lift Dartmouth to victory. The road win was instrumental for the Big Green, as it snapped a three game losing streak and brought the team's record to 3-3.

Up next are games at Penn on Saturday and against Sacred Heart on Wednesday.

Brown

After being blown out 15-4 by top-ranked Syracuse at the Carrier Dome last Saturday, the Bears defeated Yale in a classic quadruple overtime game, 15-14, on Wednesday. The victory was the product of a comeback effort: the Bulldogs held a 13-7 advantage at 10:36 in the third quarter.

But Brown stormed back with seven unanswered goals to take a 14-13 lead at 10:58 in the fourth quarter. After Yale sent the game into overtime, four of them to be precise, Bears sophomore midfielder Chas Gessner scored the game winner.

Brown will travel to second-ranked Princeton Saturday and to Harvard Wednesday.

Cornell

The Big Red have been hot lately: they have two Ivy League Players of the Week in the last two weeks, and two Ivy League wins to go along with it. Senior David Key was named Ivy Player of the Week last week for his four-goal, one-assist performance in Cornell's overtime win against Penn which included the game-winning goal.

Key joined sophomore teammate Michael Egan, who won the honor the week before, as the Big Red defeated Yale on the road, 13-11.

Cornell hosts Harvard on Saturday and will travel to lacrosse Goliath Syracuse on Tuesday.

Harvard

In a close game on Tuesday, the Crimson defeated the Hartford Hawks on the road, 10-9, to improve to 5-2 on the season. The win was the second straight for Harvard, who beat Duke 6-5 on Saturday as well. The Crimson, however, are 0-1 in Ivy League play, after falling to Penn 10-9 on March 24.

Harvard will face one of its tougher tests of the season this weekend when it travels to Cornell, who currently holds the top spot in the Ivy League.

Penn

After falling 10-9 to Cornell Saturday and then 19-8 to Princeton on Tuesday, the Quakers fell out of the top 20 by one spot, but they remain a tough Ivy League contender. They look to rebound this weekend as they host the Big Green on Saturday.

Princeton

As usual, the Tigers are off to an impressive start to their 2001 season. They have amassed a 6-1 (2-0 in Ivy League) record, with non-conference wins over both Johns Hopkins and Virginia. Their only loss came to Syracuse on the road.

In Ivy League play, Princeton has blown out both Yale 13-4 and Penn 19-8. They face Brown this weekend, as they look to remain unbeaten in the Ivy League.

Yale

After dropping two straight Ivy League games to Princeton and Brown, the Bulldogs are hurting in league play. They will get a break from the Ivy League this weekend, when they will play Duke on Sunday.
