Women's soccer opens 2000 campaign 2-1

The Dartmouth women's soccer team began the season with wins in two of its first three matches. After a season-opening victory over the University of New Hampshire on Sept. 10, the team bounced back from a loss to Nebraska on Sept. 15 with a 9-1 thrashing of Central Connecticut last Sunday.

Against Central Connecticut, the team got off to a good start by scoring five goals in the first 15 minutes of the game. Laura Ashley '03 opened the scoring just over four minutes into the contest with an assist from Jen Murray '01.

Team Captain Jessica Post '00 and Mary McVeigh '03 scored two goals each. The Big Green led 6-0 at the half.

Central Connecticut scored its only goal at 59:47.

Lea Kiefer '04 and Katie Price '02 closed the scoring to increase the Big Green's margin of victory.

According to Post, the win was a team effort.

"Everybody played to their best after a tough loss to Nebraska," she said. The game "showed a huge potential for success."

The win followed a tough 2-0 defeat against Nebraska. Dartmouth attempted 12 shots, but Cornhusker goaltender Katrina LeBlanc swatted them all away. Dartmouth goalie Kristin Luckenbill '01 stopped two shots.

Against UNH, Dartmouth got off to a great start, scoring two goals within two minutes of each other in the first half. Ashley scored first, followed by a 20-yard shot by McVeigh. The final score was 2-1.
