Women's golf places second

The Dartmouth women's golf team finished tied for second out of 17 teams at last weekend's Dartmouth Invitational tournament at the Hanover Country Club.

Princeton won the two-day competition by 21 strokes, despite trailing by two after the first day.

The Tigers' Adrienne Gill recorded the tournament's lowest shot total, posting a 77 in her first round and a tournament-low 71 on day two.

But two of Dartmouth's rookie team members were not far behind. Amanda Burrows '04 improved on her first-day 79 with a one-under-par round of 72 on the final day to tie for second place. Fellow freshman Kathy Birchall played 36 holes in 153 shots to tie for seventh.

Shannon Rogers '04 and Erika Fry '03 also finished among the top 25.

The Big Green led the tournament after the opening round, finishing the day with 313 strokes. Idaho State, which completed the second day tied with the Big Green, trailed by a shot. Princeton was two back and Yale was four off the pace.

But Princeton lowered its shot total significantly on the final day while the other contenders failed to do so. The Tigers finished 36 holes in almost 300 fewer shots than last-place finisher Albany.

Dartmouth's 36-hole stroke total of 633 was the lowest in school history.

The Big Green had previously finished second in their opening tournament of the fall season, the Longwood Invitational in Farmville, Va. Host Longwood won the contest by 32 strokes.

Rogers was the Big Green's low scorer with a two-day total of 160 strokes. That score placed her in a tie for fourth place individually.

Birchall finished 36 holes in 162 shots while Betsy Holder '03 and Burrows took 164.

The women take to the links again this coming weekend at the Yale Invitational. The men's team will host its own Dartmouth Invitational Saturday and Sunday at the Hanover Country Club.
