Women's hockey ices Boston College 5-2

The new millennium leg of the women's ice hockey team's schedule began in Chestnut Hill, Mass. on Wednesday night against the Boston College Eagles.

After falling 1-0 to Northeastern, the number one team in the nation, on New Year's Eve, Dartmouth rebounded beautifully as the Big Green handed Boston College a 5-2 loss on Wednesday night.

Junior Kristina Guarino's second goal of the game at 7:47 of the second period proved to be the game winner when she put a shot past Boston College's Christy Nentwig off a feed from Correne Bredin '02.

The win improves the Big Green to 8-5-0 overall (6-2-0 in the ECAC) while the Eagles fall to 2-10-0 (0-10-0 ECAC).

Bredin led the way for Dartmouth, scoring a goal and assisting on three others, including the game winner. Bredin is now tied for the team lead in scoring with Jennifer Wiehn '01, who also had an assist in the game. Both players have 19 points.

Freshman Lydia Wheatly turned in her best performance of the season, scoring a goal and picking up an assist. Amy Catlin '03 closed out the Big Green scoring with her first of the season at the 4:21 mark of the third period. Both Wheatley and Catlin have been a presence on the ice all season for Dartmouth.

The closest Boston College would get came at 12:40 of the first period when Jen Buckley put one past Big Green goaltender Kate Cochrane '02, who had five saves en route to her first win of the season.

But three minutes later, Dartmouth would take the lead for good on Bredin's goal that brought the score to 2-1

It proved to be a poor night in goal for the Eagles as Dartmouth unleashed 50 shots on two Eagle goaltenders. Boston College's Nentwig and Sharon VanTuyl combined to make 45 saves.

Although Dartmouth was clearly the superior team on the ice Wednesday, the Eagles did fail to take advantage of Dartmouth's penalties, which resulted in four power play opportunities for Boston College.

On the other side, Dartmouth did not score on its only power play of the game.

Dartmouth hits the road again this weekend as they travel to play Yale on Saturday, Jan. 8 and Princeton on Sunday, Jan. 9.
