Women's soccer blanks UNH

When you do what you are supposed to do, you succeed. In soccer, that means the offense scores goals and the defense keeps the ball away.

It's simple but that's what the Dartmouth women's soccer team has been doing lately.

"I don't think it's so much a matter of a sudden turnaround, but more of us playing up to the potential we've had all along," freshman midfielder Mary McVeigh said. "Hopefully it will continue from here on out."

Senior forward Melissa Roth scored two goals and assisted another as the Big Green crushed the University of New Hampshire, 5-0, at Chase Field yesterday.

The Big Green recorded its third shutout in the last three games, while improving the season record to 4-4. Dartmouth started the goal rush at the 11th minute with a goal from Roth.

After 20 minutes of see-saw play, Dartmouth took command of the game when junior Jen Murray sent a perfect cross to Katie Price '02 who headed the ball into the net at the 37th minute.

From then on, Dartmouth never looked back and UNH seemed in total disarray.

Roth assisted her classmate Jessica Post in the 59th minute as Post unleashed an unstoppable 20-foot shot into the corner of the UNH net.

Three minutes later, Roth again scored on a counter-attack, in which she dribbled 30 feet before beating the Wildcats goalie.

McVeigh concluded the goal craze at the 67th minute when she scored on a close-range header for the Big Green's fifth goal of the afternoon.

Dartmouth will host the University of Richmond tomorrow.
