In the 1986 World Series, Red Sox first baseman Bill Buckner let a Mookie Wilson ground ball through his legs and precipitated a remarkable Mets comeback victory.
In 1992, the Buffalo Bills rebounded from a 35 point first half deficit to win a playoff game against the Houston Oilers by a field goal.
These amazing turnarounds might just be on par with that of the men's basketball game between Princeton University and the University of Pennsylvania last night at the Palestra.
In the opening period, Penn worked its home fans into a frenzy, outscoring Princeton 33-9. But the next 20 minutes witnessed an incredible reversal as the Tigers scored 41 points to the Quakers's 16 and stole the game 50-49.
The raucous crowd of 8,722 was silenced as Princeton (16-4, 7-0) took Ivy supremacy from the favored Quakers (14-4, 6-1) with both teams heading into the season's stretch run.
After the worst half of basketball the team has played all season, Princeton returned with a vengeance. For the game, the Tigers forced 16 turnovers and grabbed 27 rebounds while Penn only took the ball away seven times and had 19 boards.
Princeton's star power stole the show. All-Ivy guard Brian Earl scored 20 points to go with six rebounds, and four-time Ivy Rookie of the Week center Chris Young had 11 points. Forward Mason Rocca, who scored 25 points against Dartmouth on Saturday, had 13 points and six rebounds.
Penn's only double-digit scorer was Michael Jordan. The All-Ivy junior had 17 points on six-for-14 shooting. Last year's second-team All-Ivy Paul Romanczuk was held to eight points and three-point specialist Matt Langel had only nine.
While Princeton shot a woeful 34.7 percent from the floor and only 27.3 percent from behind the arc, their ferocious defense made up for their numerous misses.
Penn hit on a respectable 43.6 percent of its attempts, but did not manage the amount of shots the Tigers put up.
Both the Tigers and Quakers defeated Dartmouth last weekend to narrow the ranks of the Ivy league unbeatens to two teams.
Penn and Princeton will play against each other in their final games of the season on March 2.
