Women's crew runs out of gas
The Dartmouth women's crew team had two boats competing in the petite finals of Sunday's NCAA Championship, but the Big Green headed back to Hanover with a pair of disappointing finishes.
In the varsity eight competition, Dartmouth was sixth of six boats in a time of 7:14.20. The Big Green had a slight lead on Georgetown going into the final 500 meters, but couldn't sustain it. Princeton won the petite in 7:00.60, three seconds ahead of Harvard. Michigan State and California took third and fourth, respectively.
"It's always disappointing when you don't win and you've pulled your heart out,"Sandra Muller '99 said, "but it still felt like a good race."
In a two-boat petite final for the second varsity eight, Dartmouth and Harvard were neck-and-neck throughout, but the Crimson pulled away at the finish in 7:29.00. The Big Green's time was 7:30.90.
"We pulled as hard as we could for 1,500 meters but just couldn't bring up the stroke rate for the final 500," Becky Frost '99 said.
"Regardless of the results, this has been an amazing experience," senior Rosi Kerr said. "We've been going head-to-head with some incredible crews and it's been unbelievably competitive."
Men's crew wins third final
Dartmouth heavyweight varsity eight won the third level final at the 96th annual IRA Rowing Championship Saturday.
The Big Green led from start to finish and won by a length over Cornell. Dartmouth's time was 5:48.2.
Meanwhile, Dartmouth's only boat to make the grand final finished sixth of six boats. The Big Green's freshman eight (with a time of 6:02.8) was bested by California (the winner in 5:46.0), Washington, Princeton, Brown and Wisconsin. The freshmen eight had been the most impressive boat for the Big Green throughout the championships and at Eastern Sprints two weeks ago.
The freshman four was fourth in the petite final as Dartmouth was 11th out of 40 crews in the overall point standings for the Ten Eyck Trophy. Princeton won with 354.7 and Dartmouth totalled 121.7.
The crew team will stay in Hanover training for the next few weeks in order to prepare to head to England for the Henley in July.
